In Kenya today, mental health is no longer a silent issue,it is an urgent national priority. With an estimated five million Kenyans experiencing mental health disorders annually and fewer than 15% accessing professional care, the need for accessible, scalable solutions has never been more critical.
KCA University is responding to this need through the launch of iMental App, an innovative digital mental wellness application designed to transform access to mental health support for students and the wider community.

Developed under the Vice Chancellor and CEO’s 2025 Research & Innovation Grant, iMental is a home-grown solution brought to life by a brilliant KCA University student, in collaboration with two dedicated staff members, demonstrating the power of internal talent, research, and innovation in addressing real societal challenges. In partnership with LVCT Health Kenya, the initiative brings together academic research, technology and field expertise to strengthen mental health service delivery in Kenya.
The platform addresses key barriers such as stigma, limited access to professionals and time constraints by offering a comprehensive, user-centered experience. It integrates guided self-help tools, psychoeducational content, access to verified professional support and referral systems, and safe, moderated peer-support spaces that foster connection and reduce isolation.
Grounded in positive psychology, cognitive behavioral approaches, and preventive care, iMental provides structured, evidence-based support within a confidential and inclusive environment, shifting the focus from reactive treatment to proactive mental wellness.

As noted by Prof. Isaiah I.C. Wakindiki, Vice Chancellor and CEO of KCA University:
“Mental health is a fundamental aspect of human dignity and wellbeing. At KCA University, we recognised that our research and innovation capacity should be directed toward solving Kenya’s most pressing challenges, and mental health is unquestionably among them. This initiative ensures that our solutions are not only research-driven, but also accessible to those who need them most.”
iMental App represents a significant milestone in KCA University’s innovation agenda, showcasing how student-led innovation, supported by institutional research and strategic partnerships, can expand access, reduce stigma and build a more responsive and resilient mental health ecosystem in Kenya. At its core, iMental is about people, about being seen, heard, and supported.
