Nairobi, Kenya, July 30, 2025 Prof. Isaiah I. C. Wakindiki, VC & CEO KCA University has been elected as vice president of the Association of African Universities (AAU) for the 2025–2029 term. The AAU vice presidency is held by three Vice Chancellors representing the East, North and West Africa.
The election took place during the 16th AAU Quadrennial General Conference held in Rabat, Morocco; a gathering of over 400 higher education leaders, policymakers and development partners from across Africa and beyond.
Established in 1967, AAU is the voice of higher education in Africa, representing over 400 member universities across 46 countries. Its mission is to promote cooperation, academic quality and research innovation in line with the African Union’s Agenda 2063 and the Continental Education Strategy for Africa (CESA 16-25).
Prof. Wakindiki’s election elevates KCA University as a continental thought leader, expanding opportunities for joint research, faculty exchanges and academic innovation across Africa and Asia. It is also a powerful moment of academic diplomacy, positioning Kenya as a strategic convener for pan-African and intercontinental higher education dialogues, including the proposed Kenya–Morocco Universities Conference in 2026. Further, this position creates an avenue for Africa’s voice at the highest levels of continental higher education policy, creating pathways for quality assurance harmonization, cross-border degrees and research networks that benefit all EAC member states according to the Africa’s Agenda 2063 pillars.
Speaking after the announcement of the 2025-2029 Governing Board Members, Prof. Wakindiki said, “This election is a personal honor, a statement of confidence in Kenya’s higher education leadership and a call to action for the African higher education ecosystem. We must now move beyond project-based partnerships to co-owned systems of knowledge creation, research, and innovations that build a coherent academic future for Africa.”
Professor Kenneth Kamwi Matengu, the Vice Chancellor University of Namibia (UNAM) was elected a president of AAU for the 2025–2029 term.
