Every day, somewhere in Africa, a researcher makes a discovery that could change lives.
A scientist develops climate-smart farming solutions for communities facing prolonged drought. A health researcher uncovers new approaches to combating tropical diseases. An innovator designs financial technologies that transform how millions access banking services. Across the continent, universities are generating knowledge that addresses some of humanity’s most pressing challenges.
Yet much of this work never reaches the global audience it deserves.
Not because it lacks quality. Not because African researchers lack innovation. But because, too often, the world simply doesn’t see it.
This paradox sat at the heart of the 3rd Association of African Universities (AAU) Workshop on Positioning Your University for Global Visibility, hosted by KCA University in Nairobi. Bringing together more than 100 higher education leaders from over 12 African countries, the workshop challenged a long-held assumption: that Africa’s struggle in global higher education is one of capability.
It isn’t.
It is one of visibility.
When conversations turn to global university rankings, they often focus on numbers and positions.
But rankings tell a much bigger story.
A university that is visible attracts international research partners. It secures competitive grants. It attracts talented faculty and students from around the world. Its research informs policy, influences industry and reaches communities beyond its borders.
Visibility, therefore, is not about prestige alone.
It is about impact.
During the workshop, university leaders explored how research dissemination, institutional branding, digital transformation, and international collaboration have become essential ingredients for ensuring African scholarship reaches global audiences.
One of the workshop’s most compelling messages was that visibility is no longer the responsibility of a communications office alone.
Researchers, librarians, ICT teams, international offices, and university leadership all have a role to play.
A university website is no longer just an online brochure.
It is the front door to the institution’s intellectual capital.
Institutional repositories, metadata, research profiles, and digital communications determine whether groundbreaking African research is discovered, or remains invisible.
Another key takeaway was that artificial intelligence presents African universities with an opportunity to close the visibility gap faster than ever before.
AI can help universities communicate research more effectively, improve discoverability, optimize digital platforms, and connect African scholarship with global audiences.
Rather than viewing AI as a future technology, participants explored how it can become a practical tool for amplifying African research today.

Perhaps the greatest lesson from the workshop was that no university can transform Africa’s visibility alone.
The gathering brought together vice chancellors, researchers, ICT professionals, librarians, and international office leaders from across the continent, not to compete, but to learn from one another.
The conversations reinforced that collaboration is Africa’s greatest competitive advantage.
When institutions share expertise, strengthen partnerships and collectively promote African scholarship, they create a stronger continental voice in the global knowledge ecosystem.

As delegates departed Nairobi, one challenge continued to resonate.
In his closing remarks, KCA University Vice Chancellor & CEO and AAU Vice President for Eastern Africa, Prof. Isaiah I. C. Wakindiki, posed a simple yet profound question:
“When the world looks to Africa for excellence in higher education, will it find your university?”
It is a question for every university.
But it is also a question for governments, development partners, researchers, industry, and society.
Because the future of African higher education will not be determined solely by the knowledge it creates.
It will also be determined by the knowledge the world is able to discover.
