Mental health is increasingly recognized as one of Kenya’s most pressing public health challenges. According to the Ministry of Health’s Mental Health Taskforce, an estimated one in every 10 Kenyans lives with a common mental disorder, with the figure rising to one in every four people among those seeking routine outpatient healthcare services. Yet, despite the growing need, many continue to face barriers to accessing timely mental health care and support. Against this backdrop, institutions of higher learning have an increasingly important role to play in creating environments where students and staff can thrive academically, professionally and personally.

At KCA University, mental wellness is not viewed as a standalone initiative or a once-a-year campaign. It is an integral part of the University’s commitment to fostering a supportive learning and working environment where every student and staff member feels valued, supported and empowered to reach their full potential.
This commitment was reaffirmed throughout June during Mental Health Week 2026, held under the theme “Jipende: Own Your Wellness.” More than a campaign slogan, the theme served as a call to action, encouraging members of the University community to recognize that caring for their mental well-being begins with intentional choices. From practising self-awareness and self-care to seeking professional support when needed, Jipende reminded participants that taking ownership of one’s wellness is both a personal responsibility and an act of self-empowerment.

Delivering the keynote address, Dr. Lawrence Nderi, Chief Executive Officer of Mathari National Teaching & Referral Hospital, reinforced this message by emphasizing that self-awareness, intentional self-care and timely access to professional support are essential in navigating today’s increasingly demanding world. His remarks reflected a simple but powerful truth: caring for our mental health is just as important as caring for our physical health.
While Mental Health Week provided an opportunity to elevate these conversations, KCA University’s commitment extends far beyond the annual observance. Through the University’s Counselling Unit, students and staff have access to confidential counselling services delivered by trained professional counsellors who provide guidance on personal, academic, emotional and social challenges. Complementing these services is a dedicated team of trained peer counsellors who foster a culture of empathy, encourage early intervention and help create a campus environment where seeking support is viewed as a sign of strength rather than weakness.

This holistic approach reflects the University’s belief that education is about more than academic achievement. It is about nurturing resilient individuals who are equipped with the confidence, emotional intelligence and support systems needed to succeed in an ever-changing world.
Mental Health Week also demonstrated the value of partnerships in advancing mental wellness. KCA University was proud to work alongside LVCT Health, Mathari National Teaching & Referral Hospital, Mental Beacon, Mental 360, The Psych Centre, and the Kenya Red Cross Society, whose expertise enriched the week’s engagements and reinforced the importance of collective action in building healthier communities.
Perhaps the greatest measure of the initiative’s impact was the response from the KCA University community. Students and staff actively participated in discussions, wellness activities and interactive engagements, reflecting a growing willingness to challenge stigma, share experiences and prioritize mental well-being. These moments reaffirmed that when safe spaces are intentionally created, meaningful change becomes possible.

KCA University remains committed to creating a campus where mental wellness is prioritized, stigma is challenged and support is always within reach.Because when individuals are empowered to care for their mental well-being, they are better equipped to learn, lead and transform the communities around them.
